BRATEAU Jules Paul

Jules Paul Brateau was student of the sculptor Auguste Nadaud, he follows the courses of the School of Decorative Arts.
He became engraver for the jewelers like Boucheron, Falize and Vever and then he joined the enameller Paul Grand’ homme. He regularly presents his creations at the exhibitions of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs and at the National Salon of Fine Arts. From 1874, he explored the decorative motifs of the Renaissance and created mainly pewter pieces.

He was awarded a gold medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Brateau’s works in precious materials are mostly small objects: cups, letter trays, brooches, salt shakers, candy boxes.
To this day, we only know of two larger works: the so-called Cassandra’s box in ivory, gold and enamel kept at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and our table mirror.
