Very exquisite Oriental biblical scene, depicting Salome dancing in front of King Herod, often called the Dance of the Seven Veils.
This exceptional dance by Salomé is very close to Rochegrosse’s Oriental vision.

The rise of Orientalism in the 19th century, as an artistic movement in France, was carried on as well in literature by Flaubert or in sculpture through Cordier, Guillemin, Leroux etc.
Improvement in transportation and in particular, the arrival of steamboats, enabled many painters, writers and sculptors to travel to the Orient themselves: travel literature became a literary genre in its own right. Between romantic fantasy and authentic ethnographic studies, works of art filled with Orientalism were plentiful in the 19th century, and illustrate a Western vision of the Orient, discovered by European artists.
