Elegant bronze group with green patina representing the kidnapping of Proserpina. This group consists of three closely interlocking characters: Pluto, god of the underworld, Proserpina, daughter of the Goddess Ceres and the nymph Cyane. It rests on a very beautiful base in gilded bronze in openwork, engraved
and gilded, bronze style.
French work in Louis XIV style, around 1880.
Based on the bronze worker François Girardon’s model of the King.
According to the legend told by Ovid, while picking flowers near a lake, Proserpina attracts the attention
of Pluto, who falls in love with her and abducts her. Cyane, who attends the scene tries to confront the god, but to no avail. Pluto leads Proserpina to the Underworld to make her his wife.
