The Nymph Callisto seduced by Jupiter in the form of Diana after François Boucher
This painting features the famous mythological theme representing the flirt between nymph Callisto and Jupiter in the form of Diana.
Callisto was the favorite servant of the goddess of hunting Diana. Jupiter has transformed into the appearance of the goddess (Indicated by the small crescent moon on her forehead) in order to seduce her young disciple.
In the middle of the composition is a country and river scene. We can see two people look into each other’s eyes with love and passion. Around them, little cupids flying above their heads confirm the love atmosphere. To their right, the artist has depicted an eagle, symbol and loyal servant of Jupiter. There’re also attributes of Diana: quiver and arrows. Each element of the painting contributes to create a sensual representation in the style of François Boucher, marked by the gentle colors like pink and light sky blue.
